| An Open Letter to Toronto: Michael Bishop Is Not Going To Save You |
|
Dear Toronto, Michael Bishop is not going to save you, despite what you may think, so feel free to refrain from any further discussion that he is the second coming of Christ. In tossing the Damon out with the bathwater this past week, you’ve not only spat on the legacy of one of the most important quarterbacks in the history of the CFL in exchange for a kid that’s had two semi-solid performances. That’s semi-solid like semi-sweet chocolate, serviceable for the task but lacking in serious amounts of taste, texture or talent. Before you go anointing Michael Bishop as the Pope Of Toronto, take a look at their last two games. A tie against a middle of the road Winnipeg team in one thing to worry about. Nobody gets ties in football games anymore, it’s like an insult to the craft, you see one every three years and it gets looked at as a black mark on the team because it’s a sure sign that nobody was able to convert their chances. If you’re unable to capitalize against a team that’s barely able to make the playoffs this year, you’re going to need to step up your game. Yes, Bishop did connect for three touchdown passes in his last game. Trouble is friends and neighbors, it was against the Hamilton Tigercats, a team that looks like they’re going to roll over and die after two games of the season. Really, no disrespect to Timmy Chang, a man who did great things for Hawaii but do you really expect a team to taken seriously when their QB is a guy named Timmy Freakin’ Chang?!?!?!?! Let’s remember that Bishop, despite being a Heisman Trophy candidate at one point, was in front of tom Brady on the New England Patriots depth-chart at one point in his career and look at him now. Fronting the Argos in their quest for respectability after they’ve gone and peed on one of the greatest QB’s ever. This could very well be the case of the re-birth of someone like Andrew Ware, remember him? A Heisman winner who backed up Doug Flutie for the Argos, he was praised as the second coming when he was signed, only to end up playing for the Berlin Thunder of NFL Europe for five games before washing out of football completely. History holds true here folks, Toronto’s highly praised new kids don’t have a hell of a track record so let’s hope that the special teams and defense can hold the team up for the rest of the season because I get the feeling that’s the QB situation is only going to get worse from here.
