Argos Have Lots to be Thankful For
October 6, 2007 12:17 AM   Written by joejames
As we enter the Thanksgiving weekend, we can look back at the year that's past in the CFL and recognize a few things to be thankful for in Argo Land.

First, and foremost, has to be that as we approach this weekend's game, it would seem that the Football Gods are in the Argonauts' corner.  Week after week, the Argonaut defense has been served up a turkey, just waiting to be cooked and pulled over the grills, and this week is no exception.  Taking out Ricky Ray did more for the Argos playoff hopes than two victories against the Eskimos could do.  Not only do they get to taste fresh meat in the Edmonton back up QB, but they can rest assured that Ray won't be doing much passing until the American Thanksgiving, when he'll be passing the peas.  This should almost guarantee the Argos a playoff spot.

Secondly, the Argos can be thankful that their QB injury came so early in the year, that they aren't suffering the same fate as their playoff competitiors, the Cavillio-less Alouettes, the Burris-less Stamps, and the aforementioned Eskimos.  When Bishop went down and McMahon went bust, this season looked all but over for the Argos.  Yet Hamilton's continued ineptitude, coupled with Cavillio's injury halting the Alouettes at 6 wins, have enabled the Argos to slip back into the playoff hunt, and quite possibly host a playoff game.

Thirdly, schedule making and division placement ensures the Argos' remaining games will be less challenging than the other teams in the playoff hunt.  The Argos stroke of luck that started when they began facing back up QBs pre Labour Day will continue down the stretch.  Fortune has the Argos no longer having to match up against a renewed Ti-Cat squad, just learning how to play defence, while Calgary and Edmonton draw the top two teams, Winnipeg and B.C., in home and home series.

Which means the Argos really need to close out the Alouettes if they want to host a playoff match.  The Western teams will cancel each other out, so he Argos just need to take care of business in Montreal.  By then, hopefully for the Argos, fortune will continue to shine and they may meet two teams in the final weeks with their own playoff destinies sewed up, and therefore resting some key players, as Winnipeg and Saskatchewan appear to be solidifying their playoff positions.

So say thanks this weekend, Argo fans.  There's plenty of football left, and an extra home date on your calendar seems to be opening up in November.
